JD's Patient Story
A 10-Year Wound is Healed by Winthrop's Multidisciplinary Team
JD is a robust woman in her early 80s with a long history of smoking and diabetes. She presented to the Winthrop Wound Healing Center with a smelly, painful wound that had not healed in 10 years. The wound was approximately 10 inches by 12 inches, and had resulted a infection in the underlying bone. At the time we saw her, she’d been told that limb amputation was her only option. However, the wound care team at Winthrop came together to stabilize her medically, allowing her wound to be cleaned safely. Tissue samples taken during the debridement procedure also enabled us to establish a diagnosis as to which bacteria were invading the bone. She was started on IV antibiotics, and Dr. Thomas Davenport’s team was then able to construct just the right operation to surgically repair the wound area.
Today, JD’s wound is healed and she is walking without pain for the first time in many years. Once again, our wound care team was able to succeed where other wound centers had failed by enlisting a combination of outstanding Winthrop physicians, including cardiovascular specialists, plastic surgeons, 24 wound care PAs, and our diabetes team.
