PN's Patient Story

A Radiation Wound Healed by Surgery, Growth Factors, Hyperbaric Oxygen and a Skin Graft

PN, a 64-year-old patient, had undergone cancer radiotherapy treatment which left him with a severe radiation wound to his left chest wall. The wound was not only causing him severe pain but had also developed a life-threatening infection. He had previously sought treatment at numerous other wound centers before finally being referred to Winthrop for treatment using our regenerative medicine approach. In addition to diabetes and obesity, PN also had a rare abnormal blood vessel disease called Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome, which results in tiny blood vessel malformations. After an initial surgical cleaning of the wound (debridement), PN subsequently received another series of debridements followed by treatment with a growth factor called human recombinant granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor. In addition, he received daily hyperbaric therapy.

Although PN’s overall condition was very difficult to treat medically, under the expert direction of Dr. Scott Gorenstein, director of Winthrop’s Hyperbaric Medicine program, he was able to continue hyperbaric treatments while receiving transfusions for blood loss due to the tumor. In a relatively short time, Dr. Thomas Davenport was able to perform a skin graft on PN’s wound, which proved successful thanks to the targeted application of growth factor therapy to the area of necrosis as determined by PN’s pathology reports.

PN’s successful treatment is a true example of how personalized wound therapy, including multidisciplinary care combined with Winthrop’s regenerative medicine approach, hyperbaric treatments and the expert surgical technique of Dr. Davenport, was able to heal a wound that had resisted treatment for an extended time.
