Peter D. Stetson, MD, MA

Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine and Clinical Biomedical Informatics,

Columbia University Medical Center

In addition to his faculty position at Columbia University Medical Center, Dr. Peter Stetson is Chief Medical Officer and Chief Medical Informatics Officer for ColumbiaDoctors, one of the nation's largest multi-specialty faculty practices with over 1,200 physicians. A leading expert in medical informatics, Dr. Stetson is board certified in internal medicine and works as a hospitalist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. His research has focused on communication and documentation issues in medicine, including improving hand-off communication, leveraging physician narrative analysis for the detection of adverse events, and developing production systems for advanced physician documentation that preserve documentation salience while supporting physician billing workflow—systems that have been actively utilized for over five years in the inpatient setting by thousands of providers.

Dr. Stetson has also developed and validated underlying models and measurement tools for provider documentation quality, and has experience in emerging trend analysis using Natural Language Processing to detect dissemination of biomedical research into practice. His research lab (the Informatics Intervention Research Collaboration) has developed novel methods for detecting redundancy of work and data in electronic health records (EHR), and documentation quality. At ColumbiaDoctors, he successfully translated these lessons learned into practice in an ambulatory EHR utilized in over 750,000 visits annually. He also serves as the co-chair of the Clinical Decision Support Committee for New York-Presbyterian Hospital, developing and managing alerts. (Click here for a list of Dr. Stetson's publications.)
